Weed and Seed is a fedral strategy aimed at reducing violent crime and drug abuse while encouraging neighborhood revitalization, increased intervention and prevention services and safe spaces within the community. Weed and Seed is unique from other fedral initiatives in that it is not simply a program but ratheran ongoing comprehensive strategy requiring collaberation between residents, community leaders, activists, local government officials, service-providers, as well as community and faith-based organizations.

The "Weed" stands for the "weeding out" of criminal activity and the abuse of the targeted area. The "Seed" stands for the "Seeding" of the targeted area with services and programs such as after-school and housing rehabilitation initiatives, and substance abuse services. Weed and Seed is in its third year of operation and its second year of funding. The Department of Justice awards a grant to various sights in the amount of $225,000 per year for the operation of a Weed and Seed sight. Half of the money awarded goes toward Weed and the other half goes toward the Seed.

Weed and Seed is overlooked by a steering committee of man city and county officials, housing court representatives, local and federal law enforcement agencies, the US Attorney's office, Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization, WSEM Bridgeway and most importantly, residents of the targeted area.
